Always a good security reminder…

Do NOT open unknown or unexpected email attachments. Even if you recognize the email address, be very cautious with the attachment if something does not look right about the email. Even if it is sent from an address you recognize, a hacker may have spoofed a valid address and used it to deliver malicious content or a virus. Look for cues that something is not right, such as random or odd email subject titles, no text in the email, typos, lack of identifying info, etc.  Source: SANS Institute

What's my operating system & computer name?

When assisting you, the TSS HelpLine may need to know your computer operating system (i.e. Windows XP, 7 or 8) & your computer name.
To find this info out, click the Start button in the lower left hand corner, (*your start button may be rectangular or look a little different), right click on Computer, and then click on properties. From here you can view basic information about your computer.

Security tip of the day…

Use a computer password in only one place! As annoying as it is to have to create new passwords for all your different computer accounts and secure systems, reusing passwords or using the same password all over the place is like carrying one key that unlocks your house, your car, your office, your briefcase, and your safe deposit box. If you reuse passwords for more than one computer, account, website, or other secure system, know that all of those systems will be only as secure as the least secure system on which you used that password. One lost key could let a thief unlock all of your doors. Also: don't enter your password on untrusted systems & change your passwords on a schedule to keep them fresh. Source: SANS Institute

Two reminders from TSS

If you are using a shared computer, log out of the system when you are done with the session – this will comply with established security measures & prevent other problems.
And if you step away from your staff computer, but will not be logging out, lock your terminal by hitting the Windows key & the letter L key. This helps protect you/your data.
